This project, called Externalising the Internal (PPP/ FMP) is about making hidden aspects of a person (their interior world), and human condition, visible. By looking outside fashion, so it is not self referential. In order to shift and change the Fashion industry should consider increasing collaboration with other industries to help the industry to be multi-dimensional and to have a wider scope of impact. This is because innovation comes when unexpected forces join together.
Meshes and gaps have always interested me because one cannot put your finger as by its nature is difficult to express. The hidden experiences of oneself is fuelled by emotions and the inarticulate recess of the human condition. The spaces are there but it is like the grasping at a shadow. Being open to accepting the ambiguity and the unknown helps us to grow, as individuals and as a society. It explores themes around identity (self), the body, introspection, philosophy and public and private.
The reason it is aligned to my visual language is with exploring my key pre-established codes such as colour, the other, texture (sensorial), layering, sense of place, questioning systems. I have used different methods of inquiry: Digital technologies (After Effects, 360 camera, Virtual Reality) drawing, first-hand research canvasing responses to quotes, series of video experiments. The project has been made more poignant by Corona virus and Black Lives Matter, as it is clear that one has the need to take stock by looking at one’s uncomfortable frustrations with the already existing systems to establish a new future that represents to amplify the complexity and richness of a person’s varied experiences.
